Description: It was a bitterly cold day and this Northern Flicker had a brief snooze on top of the bird feeder. The birds tend to gravitate to the wood in the cold...perhaps the feeder absorbs a little bit of heat from the sun. At first glance it appeared the flicker had blood on it's face, but I went back and checked other photos of it, and it was the way the feathers were kind of bunched up. No blood, thankfully!
