Description: The Flamboyant Roseate Spoonbill is the only pink bird that breeds in Florida. The National Audubon Society describes this gregarious spoonbill as "gorgeous at a distance and bizarre up close. This bird was spotted in the Indian River Lagoon in the Vero Beach area of Florida. The pink wading bird considered a "priority bird" climate threatened by the National Audubon Society. Nearly going extinct eight decades ago the decline began with plume hunters in the 1800s when the roseate spoonbills pink feathers were fashionable in ladies hats and fans. They also have been threatened by loss of habitat due to drainage, pollution, and harmful pesticides. In the 1940s they were made a protective species. They become pale pink to more brilliant pink as they get older. They stand 30-40 inches and have a wing span 50-53. I was driving down a quiet road along side a canal when I spotted this pink- bodied bird, I was in awe, slammed on my brakes and turned around to get a glimpse of this Pretty women walking down the street, pretty women, the bird I like to meet.
