Description: The Roseate Spoonbill is considered the most flamboyant of all wading birds. In the early 1800s, their wings were made into fans which were an “article of trade“ in Saint Augustine, Florida, according to John Audubon. In the late 1800s, these beautiful birds were slaughtered for use by the millinery or “hat trade“. With the establishment of the Florida Everglades National Park in 1947, their numbers began to increase.
