Ask Dr. Bird:
Well I can’t deny it anymore, summer is coming to an end. The wind is picking up and the sweaters are coming out. On the positive side, it means migration has begun so we are seeing different birds at the feeders. We had a Brown Thrasher hanging out under the feeders a few days ago.
Anyway, it’s a time of year when a lot of us start cleaning the yard and if you come across some large branches why not ‘upcycle’ them into feeders for your birds? Check out Backyard Feeding for a great recipe and some how-tos.
Dr. Bird is on two segments this episode: one talking about the status of the Canada Jay as Canada’s National Bird and on Envirominute discussing how extreme heat waves are hurting birds.
In the Headlines this episode: the Corvids are usually in the lead for problem solving and tool building but the Goffin’s Cockatoo is catching up fast after demonstrating how it can make up to 8 different tools to get to its favourite food; a blind birder in Uruguay has spent thousands of hours recording bird song and has now released the first auditory bird ‘map’ of Uruguay; and finally, Atlantic Piping Plovers have a new set of defenders – the Plover Patrol!
Have a great week everyone!
