Ask Dr. Bird:
Spring is here and I finally get to spend time out in the garden. Over the past few years I’ve been trying to plant only native plants in my yard and garden. They tend to be heartier, require less water, and attract bugs that will feed the birds. Well it turns out I’m not the only one who thinks it’s important – Audubon has declared April to be National Native Plant Month. This is now official with a bi-partisan resolution passed at the end of March. So if you are a gardener, spend a little extra time this month looking for native plants – the birds will love you even more!
Dr. Bird answers a question from Hilary about whether or not peppermint oil will bother birds. He explains how contrary to popular opinion, some birds have a highly developed sense of smell.
David is back on Brome Bird Book talking about two celebrities of the bird world – Wisdom, the 70-year-old Laysan Albatross, and the leucistic King Penguin whose incredible yellow plumage has recently gone viral.
Crows, Jays and Magpies on Winner’s Circle. It was another tough one for the judges and we ended up with a 3rd-place tie. What fun pictures though!
