The Stories:

Winner’s Circle:

Only a few days left before Christmas!!! Despite the strangeness of this year, everyone around here is excited for Christmas morning. On Backyard Feeding, I mention both Project FeederWatch and the Christmas Bird Count. Both are citizen scientist initiatives that have really helped  researchers and conservationists have a good idea of what’s happening in the avian world. The Christmas Bird Count is still happening this year in most places, and if you want to get involved, here is a link to the areas where it is active.

Dr. Bird addresses a question about feeding peanut butter to birds and some of the dos and don’ts. There are some great stories on this episode inlcuding one that talks about something we here at Brome Bird Care have known for years – watching birds actually makes you happier. A research institute in Germany has actually gone so far as to quantify it by saying that seeing as few as 14 species of birds on a regular basis creates the same level of happiness as earning an extra $150 a week!

Winner’s Circle has some REALLY creative work. Because of the irruption of Finches this fall, I’m going to dedicate 2021’s first photo comptetition to Finches!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! I’ll see you in the New Year!
