I love warm weather and we’ve had some fantastic weather recently – it’s about time! Bird feeding changes with every season, and this episode Backyard Feeding is all about setting up your feeders to keep unwelcome birds and various other critters away. Dr. Bird answers a question from Lisa Cavanary and gives a lot of information about Bluebird nesting habits. With all the depressing stories around, we’re trying to find positive ones to share, so this episode it’s a story about a newly hatched Guam Kingfisher, the curious relationship between Stick Bugs and Brown-Eared Bulbuls and good news about Christmas Island, the last breeding ground of the Abbott’s Booby.
Enjoy!
Dr. Bird,
I was curious about the bluebird story and wondered if the other eggs might not be cowbird eggs? As guess we’ll have our answer in a bit but I have noticed that they can come in a variety of colors.
Jeff
Hi Jeff, I’ll forward your comment to David. I also thought that maybe those were Cowbird’s eggs but aren’t they just a tad larger than Bluebirds so getting inside the Bluebird house might be a challenge for them… Lisa also says that she has never seen Cowbirds around.
My feeders hang from the soffits of an aluminum sunroom and I have never seen chipmunks or raccoons figure out access in 10+ years.
The squirrels have made it, but their weight always closes the ports.
Warren, you do have the best location for bird feeders!
