In this episode I combine Backyard Feeding and Envirominute to try and cut down on some post-Christmas waste. Dr. Bird discusses a very interesting feeder modification to keep House Sparrows away. I share stories about how birds with bigger brain/body ratios are better suited to adapt to new climates, amazing statistics about the number of insects that migrate every year and how the state of Michigan is now requiring Telecommunicatios providers to put blinking lights on their towers to prevent bird collisions.

So it will be house sparrows that survive the changing climate. Siiiiiiiiiiiigh. You’re sure there is no way to humanely trap these little buggers and ship them to China for food, as per the story a few episodes back? 🙂
Warren, we’ll probably end up shipping them back to Europe where their numbers are decreasing… I’d feel awful if had to send them to China. Did you hear about what the Chinese did to sparrows in the 50s? http://www.creepybasement.com/the-great-sparrow-campaign/
I did not realise the number were decreasing in Europe, given their number here.. One would think sparrows being such smart birds they would continually adapt. Thanx for the other link. Shades of North America’s love affair with DDT in the 60s.
